PRODUCT INFORMATION

You’ll notice that this edition of CSI’s e-Newsletter has an international flair. In Madrid, we’ve just opened CSI - Spain, a new office that will enable us to provide sales and technical support to our customers in Spain and Portugal. In China, we’re selling Chinese language versions of SAP2000, ETABS and two of our internationally recognized publications, Static and Dynamic Analysis of Structures by Ed Wilson and Dynamics of Structures by Ray Clough and Joseph Penzien.

Here in the U.S., we recently hosted a seminar presented by Dr. Graham H. Powell, Performance Based Design Using Nonlinear Analysis, in New York City. Engineers traveled from across the country and around the world to attend. In April, CSI representatives greeted long-time customers as well as new users at the North American Steel Construction Conference in New Orleans, La. Over 2,200 industry professionals attended.

As you may know, our new corporate office, CSI - New York, will open at the end of this year. The office, located in the heart of Manhattan between Times Square and Grand Central Station, will be our “central command” for East Coast, European and Middle Eastern operations. We will continue to expand our international presence with the opening of CSI - Asia Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, early in 2008.

In the coming months, we will present a series of seminars and events in India, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, to name just a few of our destinations. We hope to see you somewhere along the way!

Sincerely,

Ashraf Habibullah, President & CEO

In response to requests from many of our users, Computers and Structures, Inc. is pleased to announce the release of an Open Application Programming Interface (OAPI) for SAP2000. This OAPI provides developers of CADD and 3D modeling programs seamless and efficient access to all of the sophisticated analysis and design technology of SAP2000. Third-party developers can now create rich and tight two-way links with SAP2000, allowing accurate transfer of models into SAP2000, complete control of SAP2000 execution, and extraction of analysis and design information out of SAP2000. This OAPI is compatible with most major programming languages, including Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).

To meet the needs of the rapidly growing Chinese markets, CSI has developed Chinese translations of ETABS and SAP2000. They operate with the Chinese version of Windows and address the special needs of the Chinese building codes established in collaboration with the Chinese Building Design Research and Institute. CSI products are used widely in China, where local and international engineers and consultants rely on them to deliver state-of-the-art analysis and design technology for buildings, utilities and infrastructure projects. Because of the high seismicity of the country, CSI’s earthquake technology has special engineering significance there. One notable example of the application of SAP2000 in China is the 2008 Olympic Stadium in Beijing, commonly referred to as the Bird’s Nest Stadium because of its uniquely round and open structure. The stadium will be the main track and field stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics and will host the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.

CSI’s internationally recognized publications, Static and Dynamic Analysis of Structures by Ed Wilson and Dynamics of Structures by Ray Clough and Joseph Penzien, have also been published in Chinese and are now available.

Structural engineers from as far away as the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland gathered on May 4th at the campus of Columbia University in New York City for Performance Based Design Using Nonlinear Analysis, a one-day seminar hosted by Computers & Structures, Inc. The seminar was presented by Dr. Graham H. Powell, professor emeritus of civil engineering at UC Berkeley, who is recognized as the world’s most knowledgeable authority on practical nonlinear analysis.

In April, CSI President and CEO Ashraf Habibullah addressed the faculty and students of the UC Berkeley Structural Engineering Department. He presented an informative talk covering a wide range of topics associated with the structural engineering profession, especially the need to create a mainstream appreciation for the profession by promoting how the work of structural engineers benefits the world socially and economically.

Jack Moehle, director of UC Berkeley’s Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center remarked, “Ashraf’s presentation made the point I knew he could deliver so well: That the structural engineer has an important—and often overlooked—role in the community and in society.”

More than 2,200 steel industry professionals gathered in New Orleans, April 18-20, for the North American Steel Construction Conference. The conference featured presentations from top industry leaders, more than 60 technical sessions, short course educational programming, and extensive trade show exhibits. At CSI's prime 400 square foot exhibit space, CSI representatives visited with customers, met new users, answered technical questions, and gave product demos. CSI’s multimedia exhibit featured a 42-inch LCD screen that showcased CSI software-generated animations and drawings.
